Course Description
The year-long Junior Professional Practice Issues sequence of courses (491/492/493)
occurs in conjunction with the student's experiences in junior field study. Each quarter
provides a different focus for the course. Common themes of issues and behaviors
associated with being a human service professional in training are the focus of the
sequence. The course consists primarily of experiential learning opportunities,
discussion, and professional skills practice. In 2012, FHS 492 focuses specifically on
understanding how stress and vicarious trauma effects burnout for human service
professionals. Self-care strategies for professionals working with multi-stressed
individuals and families and appropriate self-care strategies for diverse clients will be
explored.

FHS students interact with the community in many contexts. The term "client" is used in
this sequence to refer to all people (or entities) who are the focus of your professional
activities and interventions.

This course requires appropriate self-disclosure related to exploring and articulating your
